How to Transition From Work to Home (Ritual)
Have you ever had a hard time turning off the events of the day? Maybe you are still thinking about what you didn’t get done on your to-do list. Maybe you are replaying a conversation with a coworker. Maybe you are feeling guilty about an argument. Maybe someone pissed you off on the drive home. Maybe you are already thinking about what you have to do tomorrow in order to play catch up.
It’s a snowball effect. You are preoccupied. There is a lot weighing on your mind. This can have a significant impact on our mood. We aren’t really enjoying our evening. We aren’t fully present to what’s happening around us.
I get you. I’ve been there too.
And it doesn’t matter if you are solo, married, have kids, or going out with friends. Our physical bodies may be in the room, but our minds are in a far away land.
I’ve struggled with this over the years. I am a former workaholic so I would come home, eat, shower and start working again. I would totally numb out to how my behavior was impacting my body and relationships.
That’s why I created this ritual that helps me shut off my work mode so that I can ease into the evening with more joy and peace.
- Grab your favorite calming essential oil or blend.
- Inhale the oil and exhale.
- Say the following out loud: “I release and surrender this work day as I transition into an enjoyable evening with those I love.”
- Inhale the oil and exhale.
- Repeat as needed until your mind is calm and ready for the evening!
Another idea is to do some sort of activity in between your work and evening time. Cooking dinner doesn't count. Here are some ideas:
- Do your favorite work out.
- Go for a walk solo or with your family, friends or pets.
- Meditate
- Take a hot bath or shower
- Create your own ritual
Mix it up and get creative! Have fun so that it can be a routine that you stick with over time.
